Day is breaking – like pure whispering magnolias

Written by Dmytro Chystiak

Translated from the Ukrainian by Hilary Sheers

Narrated by Tina Seligman

Day is breaking – like pure whispering of magnolias

In the distance, whipping out of reach

You rise from the bed, where we, like corpses

Fall to pieces in the flood (white pain

And viburnum cry – into our hearts,

A night cry, for you are young), and yet you do not rise –

You overflow like a fading-clarinet

With note so high as if from death itself,

From where birds answer you every now and then,

as if one movement is enough –

just open the window and greet the day

above the full expanse of daylight’s wound –

to create …

Day is breaking!
