BETRAYED BY THE SPIRIT OF THINGS PAST”

“Ring, ring!”
“Knock, knock!”
“It’s me- it’s us!
How are you?
What have you been doing?”
Seems benign;
could be calculated;
could be an “effect”
stemming from some “cause;”
you know
you’ve been this way before-
from the day you were born-
and each time you answered
you came away
damaged;
little hurts
that scared over
and became reminders
that
that’s the way it was,
that’s the way it is-
and that’s the way it will always be;
so, be careful;
be alert;
be wary
lest
the spirit of the past
continues to revisit you;
trying to gain your trust
and your heart
and
your soul;
only so as to
take them away from you
so that you keep coming
to look
and search
and long
for something
that is no longer yours…
