Cartoons by Dennis Renault
¡ ¡ Cartoons ! !

“It goes without saying – but I’ll say it anyway – the late, long-running cartoon editor for Playboy Magazine, Michelle Urry, possessed an all-encompassing sense of humor; it wasn’t just the t&a gags. The evidence is present in every issue but particularly in the second-string black & white cartoons. At the risk of sounding like sour grapes, the gorgeous, full-page, high-paying color work largely reinforces the t&a reputation of the magazine whereas the smaller b&w work is analogous to the sounds emanating from the back row of the schoolroom, where the rowdies and nonconformists hold forth. Fortunately for the magazine’s readers, Michelle was open-minded and encouraged those of us testing new ideas and techniques on a largely unsuspecting audience.
What appears here was created during the 1960s before the artist moved on to become the political cartoonist for McClatchy Newspapers in Sacramento CA.”
