For the Night is Close . . .

Written by Maria Mistrioti

Translated from the Greek by Lamprini Botsivali

Narrated by Bill Wolak

“For the night is close—follows the light . . .’’        The Odyssey

I speak with you

and like those peasant women

when they lament for the separation

they leave on the wet ground

a branch of rosemary

—as a talisman for the journey—

and a ripe pomegranate

which encloses

their red tears
