Poem for Old Walt

Narrated by Roger Netzer

Connecticut

POEM FOR OLD WALT

SPRING DUSK DARK SHORE

LONG ISLAND NEW YORK APRIL

SKY OVER PATCHOGUE DENSE & GREY

AS WHITMAN’S BEARD

FLIGHTS OF GREY GEESE

NESTED IN IT

OVER HULK OF HIS FAIR BODY –

‘FISH-SHAPE PAUMONAK’ –

HULK OF HIM HOVE-TO

OFF OLD MANNAHATTA –

POETS STILL

SWIM OFF OF IT

THEIR FAR CRIES FAILING

LIKE LOST SAILORS IN A BURNING

TURNER SHIPWRECK

RED SUN FLAMES THROUGH

ON THE VERY SHORES OF LIGHT
