Essay ∼ “Remembering 9/11” by Aju Mukhopadhyay

Aju Mukhopadhyay

“A World of Inferno Was Let Loose”

When 19 terrorists made the nefarious attack executing more than a yearlong plan on September 11, 2001 hitting first the World Trade Centre, New York, at 8.45 am and 18 minutes thence by a second Boeing 767 hitting another floor of the Centre, hitting Pentagon Military Head Quarter at 9.45 am by a third aircraft and a fourth planned attack by another hijacked aircraft, losing its aim due to a legitimate and desperate counter attack
by crews and passengers, crashed into an unplanned rural field at Pennsylvania at 10.10 am, it was proved that the original planning of synchronous attack failed as it failed to shake a country’s foundation; failing in its fourth attempt due to an impromptu resistance, desperate and instant. It tells that even a temporary planning by passengers genuine was more successful than the yearlong endeavors of the evil doers.

But it was successful in creating rubbles by partially crashing couple of buildings burning thousands of gallons of jet fuel. It was successful in killing some 2996 people including themselves and injuring large numbers of others. They let lose a world of inferno; splattering blood, creating panic, displaying their otherwise frail strength ignominious on innocent passengers and office staff unaware; it is their communal business for about a thousand years; looting, raping, destroying and torturing, creating a world of fear.

Inferno is in us if we ignite its fire forgetting its consequence dire. O misguided human-missiles in the world of God, did no one tell you that you too had right to live a happy life on earth until you naturally died! Didn’t they tell you that performing so called heroic actions waiting for judgment in the other world would be farcical forever?

Didn’t you ever learn that hatred and revenge creates a vicious circle perpetually creating itself consuming the fledgling insects like you who just learnt to fly with new born rage! Has America given up their support for Israel, meddling in other country’s affairs like Middle East or the Gulf
region as a result of your actions? One learns in time like the horse-riding marauders of the Middle Ages learnt at the end of their age or the brutal colonialists learnt not to dominate others as the victims too gathered strength. Even the killing of the mastermind behind the terrorist attack of 9/11 was an act of revenge. Would the other communities of the world ever merge into your community going backward in history by thousand years? Would the members of the same community never learn to condemn evil when practiced by their own brethren thereby proving that communal sense is essential for their existence?

Religion of revenge and hatred must end to give birth to a harmonious and peaceful age struggling towards a higher life in appropriate devout hour. Let us make a vow not to allow any event of terror in America and Mumbai as it happened in 1993, 2001 and 2008. Let the whole world make a resolution that terrorism must lift its hand from Bali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Baluchistan, Moscow, Paris and London; from everywhere. Let the world admit that the idea of domination of others is a forbidden chapter in the history of the world to pave the way for peace and harmony leading towards a world fearless and bold.
